Terry Lyons (b. 1948) began his career in fly fishing organizations in 1978. He began his service as the Conservation Chairman for the Red Cedar Fly Fishers. Throughout the years he has held several offices for that organization including two terms as president. Terry is a founding director of the Anglers of the AuSable. He is currently the chairman of the Habitat Committee. He is also a member of the Oil and Gas committee. Terry recently retired after years as the Anglers representative on the Department of Natural Resources Cold Water Resources Committee, and representative for both the Anglers and the Great Lakes Council (GLC), International Federation of Fly Fishers (IFFF) on the Warm Water Resources Advisory Committee and the Lake Huron Citizens Fishery Advisory Committee.
On the regional level Terry served as a director of the GLC/IFFF from 1986 until 2016. He served as the Conservation Chairman and later the vice president of Conservation for the GLC. He has also held the offices of president, vice-president, and secretary. For his sustained efforts on the steering committee of the Michigan Hydro Relicensing Coalition, Terry was the recipient, along with four others (including fellow Anglers directors Tom Baird and Jim Schramm), of the 1994 River Keeper Award. Terry is the 1995 Federation of Fly Fishers Man of the Year. In 2012 Terry was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Anglers of the AuSable.
On the national level Terry served as a director of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) from 1988-1997. During the years 1989-90 Terry was the chairman of the FFF Conservation Policies committee. From 1990-95 Terry was a member of the Federation’s Executive Committee and held the office of Vice-President of Conservation. He also served two terms as a Senior Advisor for the Federation.
In addition to these volunteer activities Terry was employed as a master electrician from 1979 until he retired in 2007. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He has two grown sons and now lives with his wife and fishing partner Gina, in Lovells, Michigan. They, along with their two setters, spend the winters in Port Aransas Texas chasing redfish and enjoying the sunshine .
